USDA IDENTIFIES SAFE PROTEIN IN CLEARFIELD 131 RICE SEED
WASHINGTON, — Evidence gathered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and testing conducted by two USDA laboratories as part of an ongoing investigation into the presence of minute levels of regulated genetic material found in Clearfield 131 (CL131) rice seed has identified LLRICE604 as the source of the genetic material.  LLRICE604 was developed by Bayer Cropscience for herbicide tolerance as part of the LLRICE600 series.  The protein contained in LLRICE604 phosphinothricin-N-acetyltransferase (PAT), has a long history of safe use and is present in many deregulated products.
 
Can Food From Cloned Animals Be Called Organic?

Or is there? That's a question being raised by scientists, activists and government bureaucrats since the Food and Drug Administration concluded in December that meat and milk from cloned animals should be allowed on the market.

New research for example shows that organically produced food has a higher nutritional value than conventional in contrast to previous research. Canada: Organic rules Organically grown foods have been receiving increased negative attention from Codex in recent years and are under threat. The Codex committee on food labelling is attempting to water down global organic standards to permit the use of unnatural substances: Sulphur dioxide causes allergic reactions in some people. Sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate are potentially carcinogenic and implicated in hyperactivity in children. Carrageenan is associated with the formation of ulcers in the intestines and cancerous tumours in the gut.
 
Organic certification loophole makes scams possible, farmer says
An Alberta farmer is pushing the province to create its own organic certification system, saying some growers could take advantage of a loophole in the new national regulations Allan Graff, an organic grain farmer near Vulcan, said the anticipated federal regulations will only apply to food products that have crossed provincial or federal borders. Graff said when the new regulations come into effect in two years, some farmers may try to sidestep the organic certification process by selling their products locally, or within the province.
 
Eco-label will create green standard for food, says Miliband

Organic farming boosts biodiversity
Organic farming increases biodiversity at every level of the food chain – all the way from lowly bacteria to mammals. This is the conclusion of the largest review ever done of studies from around the world comparing organic and conventional agriculture. Previous studies have shown that organic farming methods can benefit the wildlife around farms. But “the fact that the message is similar all the way up the food chain is new information”, says agricultural scientist Martin Entz of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.
